ENERGY MANAGEMENT (ISO 50001)
ISO 50001 was launched by ISO in June 2011. It is acceptable by any organization whatever its size, sector or geographical location. Efficient use of energy helps an organization to save money and resources. It also helps an organization to handle the changing climate. ISO 50001 helps organization in efficient usage of energy in all sectors, through the growth of an energy management system (EnMS). Energy efficiency is increasingly high on the agenda for business and organizations with the rise in cost and rising environmental awareness. The international standard ISO 50001 allows organizations in managing the use of energy efficiently and saving the cost. ISO 50001 is based on the model of ISO 9001 Quality Management System and ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS).
A framework of requirements is provided by ISO 50001:2011 for organization to:
- Improve the energy management.
- Fixed targets and objectives to meet the policy.
- Measure the results.
- Use of data to make decisions about the energy usage.
- For more efficient use of energy a policy is developed.
- Review how well the policy works.
Effective energy management system helps an organization to create a process to improve the usage of energy, to reduce the cost of energy, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and other impacts of the environment. An international framework is made by the ISO 50001 for the supply, consumption and use of energy in industrial, commercial and institutional organizations.
/Benefits of ISO 50001:
- Reduction in carbon emissions, ensuring greater compliance with legislation.
- Competitive advantage through reduction in base cost.
- Improved operational efficiencies and maintenance practices.
- Improvement in image of the corporate and credibility with customers and stakeholders also increases.
- Knowledge of equipment efficiencies increases.
- Energy awareness is increased among the staff members.
- Structured approach to the Right First Time methodologies.
Energy prices, government policies and the global economy cannot be controlled by an organization alone. But organizations can manage the usage of energy. Once they manage their use of energy it will help in reduced cost and consumption. Positive contribution is also made by the organization towards the depletion of energy resources and reducing the overall world effects of usage of energy such as global warming. In an organization a systematic approach is found for energy management. Action plans are made followed and checked which are based on energy policy and operational goals.
